Ruth Shipman (nee Marech) passed away peacefully on April 7, 2016 after a lengthy illness.  She was 84.  Born in Newark she lived in Orange, N.J., Springfield, N.J.  for almost fifty years, then in West Orange, N.J. for ten years  before moving to Whippany two years ago.  She had earned a B.A. in Education from Rutgers University’s Newark College of Arts and Sciences after attending Newark State Teacher’s College, New York University and Jersey City State Teacher’s College.  She received her teachers certification from the State of New Jersey and served as an elementary school teacher for over 30 years in Hillside, N.J..  She was also a member of the Hillside Education Association and the New Jersey Retired Teachers Education Association.  She was the recipient of the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award in 1987 and a member of the Honorary Teacher’s Sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa.  A life member of the Hillside-Union Chapter of Hadassah since 1988, she served as President, Fundraising Vice-President, Raffle Chairman and Donor Chairman, and was selected Woman of the Year in December of 2006.  She was a long-time member of Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael of Springfield, N.J. and its Sisterhood as well as its Bikkur Cholim Outreach Society.  She also served as the President of the Jewish War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Richard Shipman, of Whippany, a son, Marc (Cathy) Shipman of Warren, N.J., two daughters, Robin Shipman of Downington, PA. and Susan Shipman-Joy of Lynn, MA., 7 grandchildren Sarah (Ryan) Nodes, Daniel (Kate) Halle, Greg (Deanna) Shipman and Samantha Schneiderman as well as 3 great-grandchildren, Erin, Sean and Eleanor.
