Harriet Hendel passed away on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013 after a lengthy illness.  She was 86.  Born in Pultusk, Poland, she survived the Holocaust by fleeing to Siberia in Russia and for a time lived in a displaced persons camp in Fehrenwalde, Germany, where she met and married her beloved husband, the late Harry Hendel.  She left Germany in 1951 with Harry and settled in Brooklyn, New York where she lived for 53 years until moving to Springfield 6 years ago.  She was a homemaker and is survived by a son, Larry Hendel of Staten Island, New York and a daughter, Shirley Schwartz of Springfield.NJ  She is also survived by 2 grandchildren, Brooke Czarka and Marissa Hendel and two great-grandchildren, Tzvi and Lea.  Her beloved great-granddaughter, Batya Emunah Czarka passed away earlier this year.
